   Education Committee

The mission of the NYSGISA Education Committee is to promote and provide opportunities that foster and otherwise accelerate the understanding and use of geospatial information technologies (GIT).

The goal of the committee in 2007-2008 is to create an organizational capacity within NYSGISA that can introduce emerging geospatial information technologies and current best practices in various academic, research and application domains.

The objectives of the committee in 2007-2008 are:

  1. Establish a temporary task force to define and assess the potential for SUNY to become the geospatial education and training center of the nation, with the community colleges serving as the gateway to 4, 5 and 6 year campuses. Convene the initial meeting of this Task Force and generate a white paper detailing a strategic plan if such potential exists or summarizing the list of opportunities and obstacles that on balance have led to the conclusion that such potential does not exist.
  2. Support the continuance of the Galileo Awards and assess the potential for additional collaborative activities with the NYSGIS Program Education Work Group. Report to the NYSGISA BOD such materials and information as is needed to define a course of action for the Board to consider, in view of such an assessment.
  3. Define additional activities intended to contribute to an increase in understanding of geospatial information technology and their applications and prepare an annual work program detailing specific activities and intended measurable outcomes resulting from such a work program. Suggest those actions for BOD consideration that are required to insure the continual preparation and implementation of such an annual work program.
