Welcome to the New York State GIS Association – Your Voice
and Professional Organization for the NYS Geospatial Community!! It
is an honor for me to serve as the first-ever president of the
NYS GIS Association (NYSGISA). Over the past year and a half the
NYSGISA has devoted most of our effort in the development of NYSGISA
structure including the Board of Directors, Regional User Groups
and establishing a co-operative and working relationship with the
New York State Office of Cyber Security and Critical Infrastructure
Coordination (CSCIC). With much of NYSGISA’s organizational development
now completed we are moving forward with implementing and carrying
out and our mission and goals for the NYS Geospatial Community.
The NYSGISA was formed with simple mission in mind. That is to represent
the NYS Geospatial professional goals and interests, provide advocacy
of the Geospatial profession through scholarships, certification,
continuing education, GISP and other professional development opportunities,
provide a forum to meet and network on a regular basis, provide guidance
to the NYS Geospatial community on selected topics and provide a
voice to the NYS elected officials and leadership on key statewide
GIS issues and topics.
Through the efforts of our Board of Directors in 2007 the NYSGISA
was able to realize a number of successes including strong collaboration
with NYS on their existing Strategic Business Plan, continued collaboration
with CSCIC on education and outreach as well as a substantial increase
in our membership.
I would like to thank the many contributions by our Board of Directors
– Sam Wear, Bruce Oswald, Bob Brower, Scott Sherwood, Sheri Norton
and Christa Hay for all of their diligent work, effort and assistance
in setting and creating the direction of NYSGISA. We have a tremendously
energetic and enthusiastic Board of Directors that is both pleasing
to work with and willing to put forth time and effort to make NYSGISA
a success for you and all the professional Geospatial staff within
NYS.
In closing, we welcome your comments, thoughts, ideas and suggestions for
improving NYSGISA. We encourage you to become active in our regional
user groups and also encourage your participation within
NYSGISA as we have many opportunities for professionals to provide
service back to the NYS GIS community!!
