Galileo Award Poster Competition

DON’T MISS THIS CHANCE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE ANNUAL GALILEO AWARD POSTER COMPETITION!

PURPOSE

The New York State GIS Association is inviting all public and private New York State teachers and students to participate in the 1st Annual Galileo Award Poster Competition. Realizing that Geographic Information Systems (GIS) provide great classroom tools, the purpose of the Award is to recognize the outstanding GIS work of K-12 school students, undergraduate college students, and their teachers. For this premiere year of the competition, all submitted posters will be displayed (as space permits) at the 2nd Annual NYS Geospatial Summit in June 2007 and the NYS GIS Conference in October 2007.

SPECIFICATIONS

We are encouraging participants to submit electronic images of their poster/map. A simple export of the map in a common graphics format at 400 dpi is desired (i.e. JPEG, PDF, TIFF). Please limit the size of your poster to no larger than 11 inches by 17 inches. Posters may be in any form and on any subject, but should illustrate the students’ use of GIS to effectively communicate a central theme of any classroom topic (e.g. sciences, history, social studies, business, physical education, etc.) The use of Global Position Systems (GPS) in creating your map is completely acceptable.

ENTRY INFORMATION

Entries will be grouped into the following three categories: Grades 6-8, Grades 9-12, and undergraduate college. Each category will be awarded a first place, second place, and third place. While only one poster may be entered per student, more than one student may participate per school.

JUDGING CRITERIA

Poster entries will be judged on the following criteria:

  • technical ability and use of GIS to perform a spatial analysis,
  • creativity in using map and graphic elements,
  • poster concept/purpose,
  • clarity of poster, and
  • originality.

SUBMITTAL INFORMATION

Poster entries must be received no later than 12:00 Noon on Friday, April 27th, 2007. Each poster entry must be submitted with a completed entry form. This announcement and the entry form may be downloaded here. Please check this site for updates. For more information, or to submit a poster, contact:
